Having looked into not so impressive history Of Sash, Henry and Dana were already skeptic about working with him. Although they sensed great potential in collaboration with MGM, their first meeting with Sash ended unpleasantly as no roles were fined, discussion lacked focus and Sash treated them as ‘interns’ rather than ‘leaders and facilitators in shaping the vision’. Second meeting saw addition of one more member to the team, Alex, a student at Berkeley College of Music.
Conflicts again arose between ‘Russians and HUBS’ over how to position and market the product I. E. In children education market or in competitive entertainment market.
Third meeting saw addition of one more member, Dave Clark, an MIT graduate, which troubled Dana and Henry. Tension increased, as it raised questions about Sash’s motives behind eating Dave in the team, without even keeping Henry and Dana in the loop. The team constantly struggled to come to consensus. Perceived roles disparity, leadership void, unrecognized meetings, mutual disrespect, and cultural-differences added fuel to the fire. The greatest divide came from the contrast between creative impulse of founders and the more pragmatic approach of the HUBS students. Now with less than 3 weeks left for business plan submission deadline, Henry needs to figure out a way to work with this complex team of seven people. He needs to manage conflicts and diversity, y assigning clear roles, establishing leadership and aligning objectives such that a coherent business plan can be put together.
Problem Statement With less than 3 weeks left for deadline, what should now Henry do to help the team work together in putting up a coherent business plan.Options 1 . Establish leadership, group processes and clear-cut time bound objectives for the group 2.
Seek an outside expert for unbiased advice 3. Develop plans for two markets separately as a team and then compare the final presentations Criteria for evaluation 1. Timely submission 2. Conflict management . Group unity 4. Quality of work Evaluation of options Option/Evaluation criteria Timely submission Conflict management Group unity Quality of work Option 1 High Moderate Option 2 Low Option 3 1 .Option 1: Establish leadership, group processes and clear-cut time bound objectives for the group: Current group dynamics and inefficiency largely exist due to a leadership void. Once, a leadership is established, and group processes are defined, meetings will flow in a more organized manner.
Clarity of roles will alleviate any conflict that arises due to disparity in perceived roles. All of the suggested actions will provide group a direction that lacked earlier, which will lead to positive group dynamics, improved relations and timely submission of a coherent business plan entry. . Option 2: Seek an outside expert for unbiased advice: Seeking an outside expert, will bring trust and consensus within the group. Right now, the greatest divide came from the contrast between creative impulse of founders and pragmatic approach of HUBS students. An outside expert, respected by both sub groups will resolve conflicts and provide a much needed pill to cure the team disharmony. However, getting an expert on board may not be feasible due to time constraints imposed by fast approaching deadline of business plan entry submission. 3.
Option 3: Develop plans for two markets separately as a team and then compare the final presentations: Creating two plans simultaneously will help in comparing the two plans. The team can then democratically choose the better plan and avoid any conflicts. However, this Will result in loss of efficiency, duplication and quality of work may suffer as business and creative aspect will not be balanced in different plans. Developing two plans ay also not be feasible due to time constraints imposed by the deadline of business plan entry submission.Recommendation ‘Establish leadership, group processes and clear-cut time bound objectives for the group’ After analysis of suggested alternatives, it is clear that the above option is the most suitable one. Establishing leadership, group processes, will bring consistency and help in managing group conflicts.
It will provide direction to the group and enable them to come up with a coherent business plan on time for submission. Action plan 1 . Establish leadership by electing a leader democratically.
