Assalamualaikum and good morning fellow friends. Have you ever heard of personality? Personality refers to individual differences in characteristic patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving. After all, each one of us has our own personality. So, did genes really influence the personality? Personally, I disagree with it. For me, personality is influenced by environmental factors such as social interaction, cultural influence, and gender norms.
Firstly, social interaction. As a human being, we always make interaction with other humans, even when we are not born yet and still in the wombs. Once we are born, the first social learning starts at home with our family. As a child, we always imitate what our family members did, either it is a good or bad influence and we will follow the eldest attitude and it will end up as our personality trait. Then, peer influence can also influence our personality.
Usually, we will follow what our group of friends did, so we won’t be neglected and will be accepted by them because of the same personality traits. Furthermore, culture is one of the environmental factors that influence human personality. Each culture has its own requirement and expectation that need to be fulfilled. Individualist culture gives priority towards personal achievement more than group goals, resulting in a strong sense of competition. This makes people who live in individualist culture are more independent and most of them prefer to be unique. While collectivist cultures give priority to their family and have work group goals above individual needs or desires. That’s why most of collectivism will have a nearly same personality to be accepted in the community.
Lastly, gender norms. It was detached into two, Masculinity and Femininity. Masculinity is known as behaviors, qualities, characteristics, and roles that are considered typical for a boy or man. A masculine society has the characteristics such as strength, dominance, assertiveness, and egotism.
While femininity is appropriate for a girl or woman to behave like one. Feminine society is traditionally known as someone who has conventional traits, such as being supportive, caring, and relationship oriented. However, not all man and woman actually follow these traits. Some males prefer to show their feminine sides more than their masculine side and it vice versa for female.
In conclusion, there is no ideal personality for human and each and every types of personality has its strength and weakness. Environmental factors play a big role in human personality. Even they said it was hard to change our personality but with all these environmental factors it was possible for us to change our personality. This statement has strengthened my statement that genes do not influence personality.
