In The Gettysburg Address, P resident Lincoln efers in the opening phrase, “Four score and seven years ago,” to the foundin g of America through another important written document, the Declaration of Independen ce in 1776. believe Lincoln wanted the county to focus on preserving it, and in his speech remin ded all American citizens that this nation was “conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the propos ition that all men are created equal. ” I believe Lincoln wanted all Americans, Union and Confede rate, to focus on preserving the nation.
Nevertheless, as it became domineering that we work t ogether and fight s comrades and not as enemies, the political and changes initiated a new pe rception on how we must act, as a nation, as on, to become efficacious. “All Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with cert ain unalienable Rights that among there are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness”, it is i n this sentence from the Declaration of Independence, that the idea of the American dream h as its origins.
The phrase, “the American dream” can mean numerous different things, but amo ng the most rudimentary interpretation is that America is a land Of opportunity and freedo m for all who come o it. The idea of the American dream has influenced people to come to Ameri ca in search of economic opportunities, political choice, and religious freedom. Americans/ the colonists had wanted freedom from Great Britain because they were not being treated like citizens of the crown since they were alienated from it by the Atlantic.
They wanted to be tre ated as if they had equal rights and because they were not given these rights they stated indepe ndence from the motherland. The Jungle by Upton Sinclair ends on a positive note, showing that the Sociali st party made substantial progress all across the country. The Jungle is, however, more than an advertisement for Socialism. It describes the horrors of the meat packing industry in great de tail. Socialism is the economic system in which the workers, instead of a rich minority of entre preneurs, own all industry.
Workers receive the full fruits of their labors instead of being given miniscule compensation for backbreaking labor. Since the people are paid well for their work, work becomes a cooperative entity where people come to rely on one another and people actually are more inclined to do their fair share to help the advancement of society as a whole. The roots f this movement were based on reforms to the social and economic systems that were keeping the immigrants enslaved by the current systems that were in place.
The 18005 saw a rapid industrial development in America. Between 1 800 and 1 900 the per capita inc ome rose from $200 to more than $1200. However, the distribution of wealth was uneven, 1 % of the population owned 54% of the wealth. It is in the background that socialism flourished. S ocialism was a message of hope, when the workers could see no hope for their lives. America societys growth has granted more opportunities for African Americ ans.
