CHAPTERIINTRODUCTION A.      Backgroundof The StudyA language is atool for transmitting meaning(Dallmann, ). It means that by usinglanguage,  English, students are able togive and take information from each other. English is the most generallystudied language in the world.

It is taught in almost every level of education.It shows that English is important language that students should master. Sinceby mastering all English skills, the student can communicate with almost allpeople in the world so they can broaden their knowledge.  There are four skills in Englishlearning, those are listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Listening andreading provide students the thought expressed by others. In the other side,through speaking and writing, students are able to express their mind in theform of words (Dallmann et all, 1982: 16). In Indonesia, reading is one of theEnglish skills that should be mastered in every level of education. In thiscase, the writer focuses on reading skill in senior high school.

Based on KTSPcurriculum, students in the second grade of senior high school should mastersome competencies of reading. One of them is Understand the meaning of theshort functional text and simple essay in the form of report, narrative andanalytical exposition in the context of everyday life and to access science. Itis elaborated into indicators, those are (1) Reading aloud meaningful writtendiscourse discussed with correct speech and intonation. (2) Identify the topicof the text being read.

(3) Identify certain information from short functionaltext.There are many aspects of reading aloud assessment,one of them is fluency. According to Rasinski (2004: 1). Reading succeed isdetermined by the readers’ ability to process the text (surface level) and textcomprehension (deeper level). Reading fluency is seen as the surface level whenit is possessed well, readers can have more focus on reading comprehension. Itis why reading fluency refers to an identification of reading comprehensionability. Fluency is not obtained instantly. However, it requires intensivepractice.

Having habit in reading may promote students’ability in reading fluency. Since fluency is not obtained instantly, but it isgradually improved by practice. Fluency depends on how familiar the words andtheir reading practice (http://www.readingrockets.org/article/fluency-introduction).

It means the more we read, the more often we find the same words, the betterour reading fluency. From the explanation above, the writer would like to know whether readinghabit has a correlation to oral reading fluency of Indonesian English learners,especially in SMA N 1 Karanggede. Then, the writerinterested to make research entitled “ACORRELATION STUDY BETWEEN STUDENTS’ READING HABIT ON ENGLISH TEXT AND THEIRREADING FLUENCY OF THE SECOND STUDENTS OF SMA N 1 KARANGGEDE IN THE ACADEMICYEAR OF 2017/ 2018)”. B.      Problemsof the StudyBasedon the background of the study, the writer defines the problem statementsconsist of:1.How is the profile of students’ reading habit of the second grade students of SMAN 1 Karanggede?2.How is the profile of student’  readingfluency of the second grade students of SMA N 1 Karanggede?3.Is there any significant correlation between students’ reading habit and theirreading fluency?C.

      TheObjectives of The StudyInaccordance with the problems of the study above, the objectives of the researchare stated as follow1.    Tofind out students’ reading habit of the second grade students of SMA N 1Karanggede?2.    Tofind out students’ reading fluency of the second grade students of SMA N 1Karanggede?3.

    Toverify wether there is a significant correlation between students’ readinghabit and their oral reading fluency or not.D.      TheBenefits of The StudyThe writer conducted this study in hopethat the results can be useful for the readers, especially English teacher.1.   TheoreticallyThewriter expects that the result of this study will give distribution foreducation development especially in language learning.

It is also can be usedas the reference for those who want to conduct a research, especially regardingreading habit and reading fluency.2.   Practically a.   Teacher Theresult of this study can be used as a reflection for teacher regardingstudents’ reading habit and their oral reading fluency. b.   Students Theresult of this study gives knowledge that reading habit will help them inenhancing their reading fluency. Furthermore, it will help them incomprehending a text.c.

   Researchers Theresearchers can use this result of the study can as a reference for who want toconduct a research dealing with the topic.E.      Limitationof the StudyInorder to focus on a topic in this paper, the writer would like to limits thescope of the study. The writer doing this research to investigate thecorrelation between students’ reading habit and their oral reading fluency ofthe second grade students’ of SMA 1 Karanggede in the academic year of2017/2018.F.       HypothesisIn a research, hypothesis is theexpectation of the outcome of the study (Lodico, 2006: 55).

In conducting this research, the writerhad some expectations in mind regarding the result. There are two hypotheses inthis research: the null hypothesis ( H0) and the alternativehypothesis (Ha). Therefore, the writer presents two hypothesis asfollow:1.   H0: There is no significant correlation between students’reading habit and students’ oral reading fluency.2.   Ha: There is significant correlation between students’reading habit and students’ oral reading fluency.G.

The first chapter is the introduction, which is consisted of thebackground of the study, problems of the study, The Objective of The Study, TheBenefits of The Study, Limitation of the Study, Hypothesis, Definition of KeyTerms, and the last is Organization of Graduating Paper. The second chapterpresents the theoretical framework. It consists of Previous Researchers andReview of RelatedTheory.The third chapter is the method of research, which is consist of researchdesign, subject of the study, technique of data collection, technique ofvalidating the data, technique of data analysis, and technique of datainterpretation. The fourth chapter is finding and discussion. The fifth chapter isthe closure, which is consist of conclusion and suggestion.
