Throughout life, personnel are faced with making life changes, in which the challenge becomes whether the decision he or she makes is the right choice. These challenging dilemmas can be defended upon by using the six stages of the decision-making process.
These six stages consist of Identifying and diagnosing the problem, generating alternative solutions, evaluating the alternatives, making a choice, implementing the decision, and evaluating the decision (Bateman & Snell, 2011).Faced with a career changing decision, Gordon Peters found himself in a dilemma ND if he were aware of these steps, his decision-making process probably would have gone a lot smoothly than It did. In June of 2009 after returning from Iraq for 15 months, Gordon Peters was challenged with the decision of remaining in the united States Army and risk not being able to see his family as much as he would like, or getting out to pursue other ventures. He was fairly frightened of the civilian world because he knew that finding a Job would be a difficult task.On the opposition, he was frightened about remaining In the military because he did not want to deploy again and to be away from his family. During Cordon’s decision making process, he identified the problem, weighed out his options on both sides, and eventually he Just made a rational decision and hoped that everything would work out In his favor. With more patients and less stress on making a decision, Gordon could have sat down and evaluated the entire situation in an optimistic fashion instead of a precipitous manner.
Following the six stages of the decision-making process, Gordon could have made his overall decision with more confidence Instead of with uncertainty. Starting from stage one, identifying and diagnosing the problem, he first would have agonized that an important problem exists and know that it needs to be solved. Secondly, he will have to generate alternative solutions, for example, if he did decide to remain in the military what would be his internal goal and how would it benefit his family.Next, Gordon would have to evaluate his alternatives, for example, If he did decide to get out of the military and found a decent job, would it put a stop to him being from his family as much. After considering all alternatives, he would then have to make a choice. By making the choice, he has decided that getting out was the best alternative and now he has to Implement his decision.
By Implementing the problem, Gordon has to take action to take control of his initial problem.Lastly, he has to evaluate the decision, in which he will determine if his decision is working properly and how well his problem has been settled. Now using these steps initially, would have help Cordon’s mind be at ease and he would have been more poised with his final decision. Although Cordon’s final decision mirrored the decision he would have made using the six stages of decision-making, using a proper method would have been more logical.
Decisions that are made without logical planning, leaves room for he risk of failure.
