Investigating the effects of children, data has been recorded. The results showed that children from single parent households, were more independent, but less socially acclimated than those children who were raised by both parents, mom and dad. Before education and democracy Is discussed, highlighting other effects on children from single-parents and dual-parents will be critical in giving enforcement and an introduction to the effects that structural differences can have on a child’s learning. Dual-parenting Having two parents, by far, has produced the most beneficial and most healthy effects on children. For any social class, a child having both his parents (preferably birth mom and dad) is ideal. “While dual-parenting is the rarest style of parenting, it is shown to have the best outcomes.
In this system, a child has the maximum potential to learn from both parents” (Learn, 1996). More than likely while one parent Is working, the other can look after the child, take care of the home, and spend laity time with their child. It Is also possible for both parents to work In this system and as a result bring In more Income to financially stabilize the household. Parents serve as role models for their young and have major influences on the way the child develops. Boys tend to follow the fathers’ ways.
Boys model the protective nature, sports-watching and women-loving habits from the father figure. On the other hand, girls tend to showdown their mothers’ looks, socializing techniques, and inherit the mothers’ warm, lovable, vulnerable nature. Not only do boys learn from heir father and girls learn from their mother, boys and girls learn from the opposite of each parent as well. For example, a boy learns to trust and develop deep compassion for others. While a girl may learn to protect herself from her dad. One concern for children of two parents was their overall behavior.
There are many records and studies that correlate two-parent’ restrictiveness to an Increase of rebellion and defiance. Children might feel the need to rebel and act out when they are not given the basic freedom to grow, explore, and make their own reasonable decisions (Learn, 1996). Dual-parenting indeed allows the most room for a child to everything that they need, that they are most productive adults, even if all they are missing is another parent. Children who come from two-parents are more likely to have children and stay with their significant other (Learn, 1996).
Single- parenting Because too often dual-parenting end in divorce or the parents weren’t together, the most common form of parenting is single-parenting or Joint-parenting. For the sake of this discussion, only single-parenting will be mentioned. Raising children alone can sometimes be a struggle, even for a wealthy parent. Single parents have to assume the role of two vital influences over a child. “When a child grows up with only one parent, and if they live in an impoverished environment, it is easy to believe that the children may find it more difficult growing up” (Manning, 2000).
Things that children from single-parent households miss out on is the lessons surrounding sharing, working together to solve problems, being able to hear differing opinions on issues, and communicating in ways that are appropriate. Not at all saying that children from single-parent households cannot learn the same lessons, but there is ore opportunity and possibility for increased collaboration in a two-parent household. Another aspect of being raised by one parent, is the behavior of a child.
Children, especially the ones going through the pre-adolescence to the teenage years of life, find it okay and acceptable to deal with their emotions via anger, hostility, and animosity that may build over time and released whenever too much pressure is built up inside. One can only infer that children without two parents, sometimes, feel lonely if not given the proper means of integrating and being exposed to other peers and or sufficient role models. In most cases, the parent hardly has time for bonding and free-time with his/her child.
Reasons can vary anywhere from parents having to work and duties like taking care of the house, and or attending school (Manning, 2000). Ensuring financial stability and having the upper hand on the child’s school work and behavior can also be a lot for a single parent to do manage alone. Although most parents do have these issues, many of them manage to maintain a steady living environment. On the positive side of things, single-parenting can also have quite a few positive effects on the children. For example, the child is given more responsibilities by a single-parent to help around the house. This gives children autonomy and increases their maturity. Since the parent is providing alone, the child learns to become self- reliant and confident in his/her own skill sets” (Manning, 2000). The relationship between the parent and the child is very close and, usually, the child is able to talk freely about feelings, appropriately, with the parent. Democracy and Education Democracy as it regards to family structures and set-up can be looked at from multiple lenses. When thinking about democracy, first there’s a question of should here be an increase in the roles and rights of the government or should there be less regulation.
When considering the topic of family structures and democracy, there are two major components needed to be taken into account. The first is “family values,” derived from social conservatism. The second is “security and opportunity,” originated in the progressive democratic faction. It is important to understand that they live (Levin, 2011). Is it injustice to a single-mom if she can only afford to send her children to the lowest school in the state because of the area in which they live?
While at the other end of the state, a married mom and dad can more than afford the send their children to the states most prestigious and costly education programs. By examining the following political ideologies, an apparent discovery will help you identify with the proposed scenario. Social Conservatism Social conservatives push the ideas of “traditional” family values. Under this system, gender specific roles will be encouraged in schools. The schools will more than likely focus less on a liberal education, but more about vocation type work. Classes like Home Economics for young females and Auto Technology or Woodshed or boys.
One traditional value that social conservatives believe in is the concept of belonging. “It is important that each member of the family feels that they are loved, that they belong, and that they matter. Being a cohesive family could mean that you spend every spare minute together doing family activities, but keeping in mind that everyone is different. Creating a strong family unit is great, but each person should be allowed the space and freedom to explore the activities they think they may enjoy. People are more courageous and more willing to take chances if they know they have safe place to come back to when things don’t quite work out.
Coming together for special occasions and holidays and Just spending time together as a family is what helps build that sense of belonging” (Kruger, 2010). Social conservatism does not help any modern family of today. While the intentions of keeping things simple and old-fashion may seem harmless, what it actually does it discounts all the types of families known today. Most lower-income families, especially those who are headed by a single parent, would Just not be able to have gender-specific roles because the number of family members participating in he household would not cover all the “gender-roles. Belonging is another thing too. Lots of children from single parent homes, have harder times being able to trust individuals Just on the strength that they had to learn to survive from one solid individual. (Kruger, 1996). Children from dual-headed households also have evolved over time to so that gender roles are reversed or the way the household operates differs from the past. Lots of times, these two parent households may have enough money to send the children to better performing schools, and the things they will earn in these classrooms will push way beyond the scope of “traditional family values. Progressive Liberals When it comes to social class and ensuring racial equality and fairness, government should have a much bigger role in protecting individuals. Looking back at the scenario, the lower class family should have the same opportunity to send their child to a school performing better outside the district. Just because of the parent’s financial situation, does not mean that the child should suffer or be left behind her counterparts. Progressives strongly advocate for those individuals, including students who cannot help themselves.
Affirmative action in schools and other government type programs are employed to reduce social class barriers and allows for all households to keep on a level playing field. Rather the programs always work is a different story, but at least the following have been put in placed… Child support programs. Children and a single parent, receives financial compensation from the parent who is absent from the single parent home. This may help support the child, but usually is not sufficient if the parent sending the money does not have an adequately paying Job. The second is a free education.
Under the 504 law surrounding education, all students have the right to attend a free public educational institute (Blackthorn, 1990). This is cool because it does not discriminate against your household contribution. There are even cases in which the household may transfer funds from the public to private under the APE Voucher System. Not only do public schools offer a free education, but also in some instances, there are efforts to feed children free of charge or at a significantly reduced price. More so for students in pre-K to 12th grade, the students are dependent on the household.
If single parent cannot provide the threshold for food, the government needs to step in and ensure that no child goes starving. A big topic that concerns college level students is the opportunity for financial aid. The FAST (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), takes into account the family’s ability or inability to afford college. “The FAST calculates a family’s AFC (Expected Financial Contribution) which takes into account the presence of a single parent household verses a dual- household” (Blackthorn, 1990). These progressive measures help all students receive benefits without having to deal with so much inequality, to an extent.
The proper supports have been instituted for all families, both financially well and not. Conclusion: Dialogue and Discussion This topic was a rough yet interesting one. When I was writing about how family structures can be so vital to a child’s development. First, I took a look at my own situation. I reflected back to the way my household was structured with only having a mom trying to raise seven children alone. I saw how difficult it was for my mom, but also how hard it was for me growing up. My mother gave me all she could, and thankfully, it was Just enough. I was lucky that I had someone who was strong enough o overcome obstacles.
She taught me so much in life, including what it meant to be a “man. ” I talked with my group members at lunch one day and we discussed each other’s family structure and I asked questions about the way in which they grew up. A lot of my paper is from the stories that they shared with me in combination with the research that I found on the topic. Class is already one of those touchy subjects and I feel that the online forum really helped alleviate that feeling of shame, insecurity, and guilt we might have had talking in person. One conversation I talked about questioned the culture of African
American family structures. We were trying to figure out why it was the African Americans are the least likely to get married and subsequently the individuals that have close to 82 percent of children outside of marriage. This was a really good sighting by a peer of mine that I had not considered when writing this paper. Outside of my specific paper topic, I brought up to my group and also to my Monika counterparts something called 90-90-90 schools. These schools have 90 percent poverty, 90 percent minority, but manages to maintain 90 percent proficiency (Levin, 2011).
One classmate said that there must some extra support in the household. I system and the environment that would have done the majority of the work to produce 90 percent efficiency. Family structures have major implications for the children it houses. The parents and or the guardians that raise the child or children holds lots of weight on their maturation. While single parenting may be difficult and have its fair share of challenges, families survive and they are able to thrive. Dual-parenting households are ideal in any community; they are highly valued, but the reality of the nature is that some things Just do not work out.
Social conservatism does not do a good enough Job capturing the essence of what the idea of family is today. Traditional family values may be okay to live by and to have personally, but being integrated into the classrooms, built inside the curriculum, and used as the primary way of living makes no sense in the direction that families are embarking upon today. There’s basically no modernization, which is crucially needed to keep up with the present time. Progressive liberals, in my opinion, allows for the government to step in when things are not fair.
The government’s Job is to promote fairness amongst all people room one, two, or three parent households. The programs the progressives put forward help with this agenda. Talking with my group mates made me realize the fact that social class is affected by more than Just poverty. I have learned too that Just because a house-hold may only have one parent, that they may be fine financially, emotionally, spiritually, and physically. The lesson was new because it’s so different from the situation that I was so accompanied to when I reflected on the way that I was raised and brought up.
Family structures are a social aspect of society in which democracy plays a huge role. Children’s experiences and lives are molded by the education they receive, the protection they have under government and its laws, but more importantly by the families that love them most.
