I came to the U.S in 2013 and everything like turning a new page of my life at that time. I was starting all over again. At the beginning of study ESOL, I felt English was so hard because I did not know what people said and they did not understand me, either.
Step by step, I began catching up and improving my English skills. I have been studying Writing 115 for 2 months that taught me about writing skill. However, there was a serious challenge for me in this class. I always struggled with fluency of sentences while I was writing. I have been trying so hard so s to improve as much as I can.
So, I created a strategy to able to manage this specific challenge and complete the course such as reading more books, ask questions to others and joining study group in school. Reading more books could help my writing become better. Honestly, I did not used to reading book habit because I always felt sleepy when I turned to the second page of the book. But I realized that reading book was not only gained more new vocabulary but also studied new methods to write fluency of sentence. Like Melissa Donovan writes, “Through reading you will gain knowledge and you will find inspiration. As you read more, you will learn to read with a writer’s eyes”. That really was exactly in many aspects.
I could learn the rules of grammar in the books, then I approached them in my writing. From that, my sentences became more understand. Besides that, I could learn how the author expressed their ideas to audiences. I created a new topic that similar to author’s situation and wrote base on what I understood. In fact, reading habit helped me a lot. I could control my writing through on giving shape to my sentence become smooth. According to William Faukner, “Read, read, read.
Read everything-trash, classic, good and bad, and see how they do it. Just like a carpenter who works as an apprentice and studies the master. Read! You’ll absorb it”. That seemed a good…
