Is a very Indecisive character, which delineates the constant battle between choosing to listen to your heart or mind.
- Gig is willing to go through with the operation at the beginning of the story.
Evidence: She has obviously discussed the “operation” with the man she is with before, and seems to believe It will fix things between them. An excerpt from the story reads: “And you think then we’ll be all right and be happy. ” “l know we will.
Yon don’t have to be afraid.Eve known lots of people that have done it. ” “So have l,” said the girl.
“And afterwards they were all so happy. ” How I will use this evidence: I will (In depth) discuss the meaning of her comment In the last line that I provided. I will describe the significance of her words, “And afterwards they were all so happy,” and how her opinion on the matter at hand seems to shift near the end of the piece.
- Jig’s opinion switches upon her thinking it over, and she attempts to communicate this to the American.
Evidence: She makes a subtle remark that depicts her true feelings, although the American chooses to Ignore It.They’re lovely hills. ” she said. “They don’t really look like white elephants.
I just meant the coloring of their skin through the trees. ” How I will use this evidence: Given the symbolism here (the “hills” being the baby, “white elephants” being something that nobody wants, “the coloring of their skin” being the Idea of the baby, and trees being their worries about the alterations that would come to their life If they were to add a child Into the mix), I will try to communicate the significance of this one line of text. And the overall value that It holds when applied to the rest of the story.
- Gig realizes that going through with the operation wont change anything in their life, and that It wont make them any less unhappy than they are, only after once more changing her mind and saying that she will go through with the operation because It will make the man happy.
Evidence: She doesn’t quite believe him when the American attempts at consoling her and reassuring her that the operation is going to solve all of their relationship issues. Her comments seem doubtful of his words. “We’ll be fine afterwards. Just like we were before. ” “What makes you think so? ” “That’s the only thing that bothers us.
It’s the only thing that’s made us unhappy. ” The beads. “And you think then we’ll be all right and be happy.
” “And if I do it you’ll be happy and things will be like they were and you’ll love me? ” “If I do it you won’t ever worry? ” “l won’t worry about that because it’s perfectly simple. ” “Then I’ll do it. Because I don’t care about me.
” “What do you mean? ” “l don’t care about me. ” “Well, I care about you. ” “Oh, yes.
But I don’t care about me. And I’ll do it and then everything will be fine. ” How I will use this evidence: Gig shows that she’s conflicted about the subject.
She ants to believe that the operation is going to fix things, but at the same time, deep down, she knows that it won’t, and that realization causes her to doubt his words. I will use evidence from the text as well as inferences and explanations from what I gathered to explain my opinion, and what I took from her words as well as details included in the story (her actions).I’m not quite sure if my understanding of the symbolism is accurate, and I may need to reread the story and try to understand things from a different perspective to depict different possible explanations for the meanings of each symbol included in the story.
