It has become a common requirement by many institutions to give their students this kind of essay. In a five paragraph essay, each paragraph must carry a certain theme on the topic of essay given. From its name, the five paragraph essay has five paragraphs.
Consistency is the key thing when writing a five paragraph essay. The structure of a five paragraph essay is organized in format, described below.
The introduction should start with a general discussion of your subject and lead to a very precise statement of your main point or thesis. Often an essay begins with a challenging claim, or amazing story to catch a reader’s attention. The thesis should tell what your overall point or argument is in maximum size of two sentences, and shortly, what will be your main body paragraphs about.
Body paragraph one
The first body paragraph should contain the strongest argument, most clear example and illustrations, or an obvious beginning point. It should lead the reader into the first piece of evidence you use to support your thesis statement, your argument. You could think of it as of mini thesis of the paragraph. The evidence must all rotate around a single theme and should be in a quotation form. Once you use a piece of your evidence make sure to explain it with one or two sentences.
Body paragraph two
The second body paragraph should follow the exact same rules as the first one. It should contain the second strongest argument, second most clear example and illustration, or the obvious follow up of the first paragraph. You must open this paragraph with a transition sentence, the one that will lead from the previous theme to the current one.
Body paragraph three
The third body paragraph should contain the weakest argument, weakest example and illustrations, or an obvious follow up to the second body paragraph. You must open this paragraph with a transitional sentence, the one that will lead from the previous theme to the current one. The last sentence of this paragraph should include a hint that will help the reader to determine the final major point of the essay paper.
Your conclusion is a wrap-up of the entire essay. You should write your conclusion with a belief that you have proven every point of your essay. You can relax when writing a conclusion and allowed to provide with little extra pieces of information that make the reader think more than you revealed in your essay paper. Think about what idea or feeling you want to leave your reader with. The conclusion is the reverse of the introduction and at the beginning it seems very specific and becomes more general as you finish it.
As a rule of thumb dictates, introduction should be interesting and captivating to the reader and where applicable, include thesis statement in the introduction. After finishing your five paragraph essay give it to friend for reading and monitor the reaction. He could tell you about something you missed in your essay so make sure there would be no general mistakes before give it away to your lecturer.
