In this research paper we will considerexploring about critical literacy based on the questionnaire designed by us.This will explore different perspectives of critical literacy and the knowledgeof ESL among the students. As based on our questionnaire after discussing withthe professor I came to know that the questions should be based for studentwith education of more than 14 years. So main target of our questions were 1stsemester students of NUST. We passed out more than 50 questionnaire and got aresponse out of which almost 20 were reasonable.
We will go through theconclusion in the end. But for critical literacy we have some stuff to discussbelow before. Introduction:Critical literacy is no longer a new study among students and researchers inliteracy education. Actually, it has been around for decades. Critical literacy is frequently believed to be fundamental thinking or higherorder thinking, an idea primarily based on getting to know taxonomies. The thought is that some types of studying require cognitive processing thanothers. The ways of teaching should be different for different group ofpeople. Skills involving analysis, evaluation andsynthesis are idea tobe of a greater order, requiring distinctive mastering and teaching methods, than the gaining knowledge of data and concepts.
Higher order questioning involves the knowledge of complicated judgmental abilities such as essential thinking and problem solving. Critical Literacy Is Only about Reading and Writing:If someone asked what is it to beliterate, most people willsay analyzing andwriting. Undeniably analyzing and writing are the most used literacy competencies or language arts inour society. They are not only used in our daily communication butalso tested in schools. In fact, this myopic view on literacy is reflected in the titles of literacy guides we provide at the college level.Education publications suchas Methods of Teaching Language Arts are supposed to be a comprehensive survey of more than one language arts andtheir pedagogical methods. Yet such courses usually focus narrowly on studying and writing.
In fact, most of the literacy courses in education region a substantial emphasison these two literacy skills. This lopsided emphasis also leads to the misconception that crucial literacy is only about reading and writing. Critical literacy inpractice:Thedevelopment of critical literacy encourages students to raise questions aboutdifferent issues like class, race, gender, socioeconomic states etc. Teachesuse critical methods to demonstrate how to evaluate the function language playsin the social construction of the self. Students who learn it and being acritical literate, have master ability to read and critique messages in textsin order to better understand where knowledge is beneficial. These in order tobe a critically literate, student must learn to “read in a reflective manner”. Critical literacy andsocial action:Byapplying critical literacy in education, students will learn how to visualize aworld in which all people have access and opportunity. When students learn touse tools and methods of critical literacy, they can expose discuss, andattempt to solve social injustices within their own lives.
By participating insocial question, or creating a public discourse. Students may see the relationb/w curriculum and the world beyond the walls of school. Critical literacy in theclass room:Withinthe frame of critical literacy, it is important to look at teats, like novels, magazines, articles, short stories, films etc., through and eye that challengestraditions of society. Students can evaluate tests and de-construct themeanings of those messages. Using critical literacy, teachers encouragestudents to look at teats from other perspectives and re-creak them. Critical Literacy Is Meant for High Ability Students:The misconception that critical literacy is intended for high ability college students is in fact tied too closely to the first myth that critical literacy is essential thinking or higher orderthinking.
Specifically, if criticalliteracy is believed, or misbelieved, to be greater order thinking, it appears lifelike that excessive ability college students are better at more advanced cognitive skills Critical Literacy Is Critical Thinking:Critical literacypractices encourage college students to use languageto question the everyday world, to interrogatethe relationship between language and power, to analyze culture and media,to understand how power relationships are socially constructed, and to reflect on consideration on actions thatcan be taken to promote social justice…. These practice are substantively unique from what are often referred to as critical thinking approaches. . Although critical thinkingapproaches have focused more on logic and comprehension, critical literacieshave focused on identifying social practices that keep dominant ways ofunderstanding the world and unequal power relationships in place.
