In today’s society, we consume far too many makeup products without thinking extra carefully about what we are choosing, and the main problem with makeup products is that you could be supporting animal brutality unconsciously.

The majority of makeup products is from the beginning tested on animals to see if it would work on us human beings, but one thing that often remains outside the topic is the pain that the animals suffer from due to the experiments. Most of the things performed in those labs you could never imagine one human being to another. I place confidence in that animal testing should be illegal because it is cruel, not very reliable, inaccurate, and is proved to be unnecessary. Experimenting on animals for medical research is cruel and inhumane.

The problem for us human beings is that we do not realize that the animals cannot consent, whereas we humans can consent whether to be tested on or not. One thing that often happens in different medical research is that they tend to suffer from pain and torture when being tested on. According to Humane Society International, animals used in research and experiments frequently subject to forced inhalation, forced feeding and different wounds. When analyzing the process how scientists take care of their animals, it is very identical to torture. Just imagine yourself trapped inside a locked up cage without any control of your life. You live like a prisoner which means you cannot decide on your own what to eat when to eat what do or where to go, if you want to interact with others or if you want the lights on or not. Think about living your entire life like a prisoner that has never committed a crime before.

This is everyday for animals that are used to being tested on. This is clearly a life filled with deprivation, misery and desolation. And if you think that this kind of suffering in animals is rarely happening in society, you are wrong. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) (https://animal-testing.procon.org) reported in 2016 that 71,370 animals suffered pain during experiments while being given no anesthesia for relief, including 1,272 nonhuman primates, 5,771 rabbits, 24,566 guinea pigs and 33,280 hamsters.

A counter- argument against this could be that a human life is more worthwhile than an animal’s life but one point worth considering is that everyone may not share the same view as to whether it is right to harm animals or not. Instead of using innocent animals as testing objects, there are in fact other options. We have today developed so many new testing methods now so we do not need to be doing animal testing. For example, different cell models that can imitate a living organism. Secondly, there are also new nano models where different bodies are recreated on a chip. This means that we can take information from an individual and use it instead of animal from experiments. There are also researchers stating that animal models give no complete truth.

Paul Furlong, Professor of Clinical Neuroimaging at Aston University, Birmingham, stated “It is very hard to create an animal model that even equates closely to what we are trying to achieve in the human.”(https://www.livescience.com/46147-animal-data-unreliable-for-humans.

html). Thomas Hartung, Professor of evidence-based toxicology at Johns Hopkins University, argues for alternatives to animal models by reason of “We are not 70 kg rats.”(https://www.livescience.com/46147-animal-data-unreliable-for-humans.html).

Briefly, their arguments were that we humans cannot compare ourselves to different animals such as rats for instance, which leads to the conclusion that we have to research and find new and innovative methods to get better information from experiments. Third argument : Drugs that pass animal tests are not necessarily safe.An important point to know in case of argument pro or contra whether animal testing should be legal or not is that drugs and cosmetics that passes animal tests are not always 100 percent safe. A study from 2004, made by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) USA, showed that medicines that went through clinical trials with purpose of animal testing failed to be approved. The study also stated that 50 percent of them were either withdrawn or relabeled due to relentless adverse effects not detected during animal tests. Another study made nine years later from Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), showed through experiments that drugs antecedently tested on a mouse, contemplated to reduce inflammation on seriously ill patients, failed in approximately 150 human critical trials.

In conclusion to this argument, it is clear to see that animal testing is not the most effective method, it is instead unethical and it should be illegal.
