(show 3 pictures of the incident before continuing) rhetorical question:So hears a question for you all hear today, “Does anyone her support gun violence?”When you mean “defend” do you really mean take the life of others?filler: Research has proven the amount of deaths caused by guns are abounding.July 7th, 2016- Five Dallas police officers were killed after a military veteran ambushed them in a sniper attack during a demonstration against fatal police shootingsJune 12th, 2016 – Forty-nine people were killed and 53 were injured at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Fla.,December 2, 2015 – Police in San Bernardino mounted an intense manhunt for an armed couple who fired dozens of shots inside a conference hallJune 17th, 2015- Nine people were shot dead at a historic black church in Charleston, S.C. The victims ranged in age from 26 to 87 .United states has a problem with gun violence and I hope I can convince you today that the US should issue gun control in the united states.BodyMain idea #1- reduce gun homicides and suicidesThe number of gun deaths in the US alone is impeccable.
The increased firearm related deaths is a concern for many of us. As of 2017, we have had 60,055 number of gun violence incident in the US, 15,168 were deaths, 30,593 where injuries, 716 of them were children, 3,176 of them were teens, and 337 of these incidents were mass shootings. How can we stop these tragedies from happening? Its not just the high profile mass shootings that we should solely be focusing on but the daily death by gun that claims 30,593 lives every year.Researchers examined suicide rates in Connecticut after passing law that requires people to apply for permits with a local law enforcement and take eight hours of gun safety training before they can buy a firearm. The rate of gun related suicides in Connecticut in the 10 years after its law passed was 15% lower than what it had been since the law was passed.
I think this law should be adopted because i believe committing suicide or homiceide is a hard thing and when we make a difficult thing harder then the likely hod of someone wanting to go through with a plan will be less likely. These study proves that America would have a safer environment with less guns and with tougher gun restrictions. It is clear that guns are an important problem, since people are getting shot at gas stations and even in their own homes.
People with access to more guns tend to kill more people with guns. States with higher gun ownership rates have higher gun murder rates. Gun death rates are generally lower in states with restriction such as safe storage requirements or assault weapon bans.supporting materialssupporting materialsMoreover,Main Idea #2-gun in a home is far more likely will kill a friend or a family member instead of an intruder.
For example, on December 14, 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, Adam Lanza murdered 20 children and 8 adults, including himself (Lende). While the Mass murder at Sandy Hook was premeditated, and Adam Lanza probably would have found another way to kill even if he didn’t have access to guns, he would not have been able to do nearly as much damage. Many people argue that guns are necessary for self defense, however, Arthur Kellerman and Donald Reay’s research states that “a gun kept in the home is 43 times more likely to kill a member of the household as an intruder”. Owning a gun and keeping it in your home has been linked to higher risks of homicide, suicide, and accidental death by gun. For every time a gun is used in self- defense in the home, there are 7 assaults or murders, 11 suicides attempts, and 4 accidents involving of homes with guns and kids have at least one unlocked firearm.
In one experiment, one third of 8 to 12 year old boys who found a handgun pulled the trigger. The safety of keeping guns in the home is overestimated.Harvard school of public health in the 2009 article Harvard injury control Research Center it states, “Gun death rates are 7 times higher in the states with the highest compared with the lowest household gun ownership.
” Authors Miller, hemenway, and Azrael also agree with this statement as they state in the article, State-Level homicide victimization rates in the US in relation to survey measures of household Firearm ownership in 2001 that we can observe a tend the states where there are increased levels of homeowner gun owners ave an higher firearm homiced of 114 percent and ” 60 percent higher homicide rates that states with lore gun ownership.” If we continue to strengthen the restrictions on gun laws the less loopholes will be in place for people to get guns illegally.Main Idea #3- reduce historical massacreIts obvious that more guns wont stop gun violence. America has endured so many mass shootings. Shootings in a church, concert, school, and workplace is unexceptable.
Something needs to be done.. It is far too easy to get control of a gun. A device that can end a human life should not be easily accessible to anyone. Too many lives have been lost to not have these reforms. If we reaffirm strict measures on gun control laws we can limit the amount of ammunition someone can buy in a single purchase and annually, stricter background checks to purchase a gun, and …..Although mass shootings account for a small portion of all gun deaths, they have an outsized influence relative to other homicides.
Mass shootings have occurred many times throughout history, but have become more prevalent as the spread of information increased through new forms of media. Two recent mass shootings are at Columbine High School and Sandy Hook Elementary School. At Columbine, Dylan Kliebold and Eric Harris killed 12 students and 1 teacher. At Sandy Hook, Adam Lanza, a socially awkward and mildly autistic student with no criminal record, killed his mother, took 4 of her AR-15 rifles and .223 caliber bullets to murder 20 children and 6 adults. The effectiveness of gun control on the prevention of mass shootings is often debated.
But with the examples provided, I believe strict gun control is what we need to get guns out of the hands of the wrong people. Conclusion:In conclusion, we have seen that there are positive justifications to gun control in the united states. The number of deaths due to firearms is an alarming problems. While it may be true that guns are not involved in every murder, strict gun controls can help reduce gun homicides and suicides, reducing the amount of guns at home that could be used on a family member on accident or purposefully, and reduce historical massacres.
