0px ‘Helvetica Neue’; font-kerning: none}  Magdalena Carmen Frida kahlo Y Calderón is known for her paintings. At six years old she became disabled in her right leg from Polio. Her leg was shorter and thinner than her left leg. The illness caused her to be bullied and isolated from her peers. Her father Guillermo Kahlo helped her through this tough time. He taught her about literature, nature, philosophy, and photography. She helped him retouch, develop, and color photographs.

He encouraged her to play sports to gain strength. Because of her illness Kahlo started school late. She attended the local kindergarten and primary school in Coyoacán. She was home schooled for fifth and sixth grade. Kahlo was enrolled into a different school than her sisters. She was put into a german school but was soon expelled for being disobedient.

She then got sent to vocational teachers school but soon left because she was being sexually abused by one of the female teachers. “I think that little by little I’ll be able to solve my problems and survive”.In 1922 Kahlo was accepted to the elite National Preparatory school.

Where she studied science and aimed to be a doctor but on September 17, 1925 Kahlo was in a accident on the way home from school.”There have been two great accidents in my life. One was the trolley, and the other was Diego. Diego was by far the worst”.  A streetcar had collided with the wooden bus she was in and left several people killed. Kahlo suffered nearly fatal injuries.

She had an iron handrail impaled through her pelvis, fracturing the bone. She also fractured several ribs, her legs, and her collarbone. She spent a month in the hospital then two months recovering at home. She then returned to work later on she started complaining of fatigue and back pain the doctor then ordered x-rays which had shown the accident displaced three vertebrae. She was had to wear a plaster corset which confined her to bedrest for 3 months and left her unable to walk.  “I love you more than my own skin” Diego Rivera was Frida kahlo’s husband. But before they were married they were work partners. They married August 21, 1929.

He was 42 and she was 22 Diego was a very unloyal man he promised to be loyal to Frida but of course broke his promise. He slept with many women. Frida didn’t like it but she didn’t complain. Until he slept with her sister of course that broke her heart she began to drink excessively. Frida and Diego soon later divorced and remarried December 8, 1940 in San Francisco.

When frida divorced diego she cut her hair because he liked it long. She then painted a self portrait of her sitting in a chair in her ex husbands oversized suit with scissors in her hand and all her hair chopped off laying on the ground. “I leave you my portrait so that you will have my presence all the days and nights that I am away from you.

“”My painting carries with it the message of pain”. This conflict ended Kahlo’s dream of becoming a doctor but also caused her to be a successful artist. “I am not sick. I am broken. But I am happy to be alive as long as I can paint”.  “I never paint dreams or nightmares.

I paint my own reality”.  Since she was unable to walk she would put a mirror above her bed to see herself so she could paint self portraits her paintings explained her life and the pain she was feeling. “I paint self-portraits because I am so often alone, because I am the person I know best”.The short term affect the crash had on frida was bed rest for 3 months. The long term affect was having back pain and being very fragile.

When she got X-rays for her back pain it turns out the crash had displaced three vertebrae so she had to wear a corset and be in bed rest for a little while. But in 1953 gangrene set into her right foot and her leg had to be amputated below the knee and all of that left her to bed rest for the rest of her life. “Feet, what do I need you for when I have wings to fly?” July 13, 1954 she died by pulmonary embolism set on by pneumonia.  “People in general are scared to death of the war and all the exhibition have been a failure, because the rich – don’t want to buy anything.” The effect frida has on the world today is her art it inspires other people to paint their pain and to paint self portraits. “I paint my own reality.

The only thing I know is that I paint because I need to, and I paint whatever passes through my head without any other consideration.” Her art inspired me to draw a self portrait and to paint my feelings.  “I hope the leaving is joyful; and I hope never to return.”Frida kahlo was born July 6, 1907. The trolly wreck was September 17, 1925. Frida married Diego August 21, 1929 she divorced Diego November 6, 1931 and remarried Diego December 8, 1940. Frida died July 13, 1954.”I tried to drown my sorrows, but the bastards learned how to swim, and now I am overwhelmed by this decent and good feeling.”
