Law is the backbone of our country, it is needed for the growth of our societies. The functions of law help to control the chaos that would in sue should law be overtaken or never have been in place to begin with. Law is part of our everyday lives, when we drive, in our businesses, while we sleep, law is always there. Sometimes our bad habits collide with the law and loses. There is a reason for this, the law has a mission and purpose. Even though it may seem to always be against you or could be always working for you depending on where you are looking from, law plays a necessary role in our ivies, businesses, and in society.
When you look at law and what its functions are in society, you Will find that there are many of them. However, there are four principal functions: establishing standards, maintaining order, resolving disputes, and protecting liberties and rights (Harris, 2014, Para. 1). The first of the principal functions, establishing standards, is the area in which laws are not only made, but the precedence has been determined by the court, put into practice the standard or law that has been intended. Secondly, is maintaining order.
Maintaining order is the area that it is put into the hands f the citizens as believe that they will withhold the new laws and standards set force by the government. Should they not be withhold federal and local law enforcement officers are there the aid in the third function, resolving disputes. Law is a system of order that defines crimes and levies punishment for violations, and resolving disputes by providing a basis for deciding the legal interests and rights of the parties (University of Phoenix, 2011, slide 5).
In resolving disputes the unavoidable disputes are often resolved by the courts. The courts should have a clearer understanding of what the tankards and laws mean. Lastly is the protecting of liberties and rights. By protecting our laws and standards from any form of intrusion whether that be, individuals, other countries, our own government, or organizations, our country will prosper and become grand again. According to “Billingsgate” (201 1), Galatians 9 states, ‘Why, then was the law given at all? It was added because of transgressions… (The Law and the Promise). Had we not had transgressions there would be no need for the law. Law is set in place to maintain a certain order of control, to mediate between those who omitted a crime to those who were affected by that crime. Sometimes the law works out for the best and sometimes justice was not served, that is something that we have to live with. The role of law is not to be perfect but rather to be the middle man that does its best, whatever that might be, to uphold what is right, protecting it and nurturing it, while asserting the law.
According to “Quotations from Teddy Roosevelt” (n. D. ), Theodore Roosevelt is quoted as saying, “No man is above the law and no man is below it; nor do we ask any man’s permission when we ask him to obey it. Obedience to the law is demanded as a right; not asked as a favor – December 7, 1903” (Para. 68). These words Were not only true back in 1903 but they are still true today. A man does not possess the power to be above the law, neither is the law above the man.
