The skin and senses system or the integumentary system is one of the most important systems in the human body. The skin covers the whole body and some of the organs are the skin, nails, ear, tongue, eyes, and nose. Here’s a fact: Melanocytes, a special skin cell, give hair and nails it’s natural color, Although people dye their hair into lighter and darker shades of the most random colors. Overall, the skin and senses system is pretty cool and there is tons to learn about! The main part of the skin and senses is, ofcourse, the skin. The skin is just as important as the heart and brain. Skin has different skin cells which is all different types of colors.
Skin cells are made out of keratin. Skin is also almost completely waterproof, but produces sweat from sweat glands. The skin has three layers- the dermis, the epidermis and the subcutaneous tissue. The epidermis is the outer part and is as thin as a sheet of paper.
The dermis is 15 to 40 times bigger than the epidermis and is the middle layer. Lastly, The subcutaneous tissue is more thicker than the epidermis and dermis combined! Sometimes skin is very dry and flaky so you might want to moisturize it and if you feel itchy, please do not use that product again and if it still bothers you, go to the doctor. The eye is a big organ and our most important one. It makes us see the world around us. We are always using our eyes for watching TV, reading, and so much more. Seeing is a very precious sense, but some people are blind and cannot see the world. The eyes detect light. Seeing happens within one second.
the brain looks for designs it is familiar with and it compares other designs it is familiar with. Seeing is because of reflected light from light sources that turn into nerve impulses. Did you know that your eyes don’t actually see things? They actually see the light that reflects off the object. The eye is very complex and very important in the body. The ear helps you hear different sounds like loud and quiet noises.
Everything makes a sound wave. There are three parts of an ear which is the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear. The Pinna is part of the outer ear that you can see which is the flappy part of the ear.
Our ears also help us keep our balance. Ears have a lot of organs inside our ears that respond to movements which tell the brain any changes with the head. Then the brain then gives messages to muscles in our body to keep the head and body steady while we sit, walk, or move. The ear does a lot more than help you hear different sounds. The nose is used for smelling and breathing which also forms some of the face. We breathe from 2 openings called nostrils which are separated from septum which is a thin wall of cartilage. Smell is connected to taste. It smells things which is why you taste things.
People believe that taste are really sensations of odors. For example, we really smell coffee, sweets, and apples more than we taste them. The nose has two holes in the middle called nostrils which are separated by a wall called septum. The septum is made of very thin pieces of bone. In the middle of your face is an opening called the nasal cavity. It connects to the back of the throat. It is separated by the inside of your mouth by the roof of your mouth.
When you breath in from your nostrils, air comes in the nasal passages and comes into the nasal cavity. Then air goes down the back of your throat into the windpipe called the trachea into the lungs. The nose has a lot of different parts to it and is in the middle of the face. The tongue is the major organ of taste. The tongue helps with chewing and swallowing and only has only 4 tastes which is sweet, sour, bitter and salt. Taste buds are very delicate to those 4 tastes than any others. Tasting and smelling food wants you to have good food and tells you to stay away from the bad food.
It also helps with sounds of words. It is helpful to all animals like dogs and cats use their tongues to clean their fur and other types of purposes. The tongue is covered with a mucus membrane. The interior part of the tongue is very smooth unlike the outer part of the tongue which is rough.
It is made up of a muscle that humans can control called the skeletal muscle. The tongue is a HUGE part of tasting and digestion, but only has 4 taste buds. The nails are made of skin cells that are all packed together.
Your fingertips are easily affected, but that’s where your nails come in. You can easily bruise your nails by bumping it hard onto something. you can also break your nails which are very hard and slow in growing.
Nails help you hold tiny objects and are growing from a root in the skin. Nails are hard and protect easily affected parts of your body. Nails have u- shaped cuticles and start in the nail root which is under the cuticle. Fingernails grow about a tenth of an inch each month. It takes one nail about 3 to 6 months to grow completely. Overall the nails are important and are easily bruised and broken.
The skin and senses system may not seem that important, although it is one of the main and most important systems in the human body. Skin helps the body in many ways. For example, the skin prevents bacteria from coming into most of the body and also protects you from harmful sun rays. The nails and hair are called skin appendages. There are a lot of organs in the skin and senses system and so much to learn about.
