The with their ballots, and that means to

The electoral college is the mechanism established by the United States Constitution for the indirect election of the president and the vice president. They are a body of people representing the states of the U.

S. … and that is what our ballots technically go to. Presidents and vice presidents are not chosen by direct popular vote but rather by the electoral college. When we show up to a presidential election, we are given a ballot (A ballot is a device used to cast votes in an election, and may be a piece of paper or on a device).

We expect to cast our votes for whoever the candidate we want, however, we vote for their electors instead. In every state a list of electors is pledged to each candidate. Every state has one elector for each of its U.S. senators and representatives, the total number of votes i the Electoral College is 538.

(Washington, D.C., has three electoral votes.

) The candidate who receives a majority of these votes, 270 or more, wins the election. The purpose of the popular vote is to choose one of these candidate’s of electors, but not actually on the candidate. That is our problem, because each state’s electoral vote total is based on the number of its congressmen plus senators, less- populated states have an exaggerated influence. Today the college tips the scales in favor of smaller states. That bias creates the risk that the candidate winning the most popular votes will lose the election.

And that is exactly what happened three times in our history, plus last year with Donald Trump. Another reason states in The New York Times,  “By overwhelming majorities, Americans would prefer to elect the president by direct popular vote, not filtered through the antiquated mechanism of the Electoral College.” American citizens understand the basic fairness of awarding the presidential office is the same basis as every other elected office- to the person who gets the most votes. They want to vote for their president and vice president directly with their ballots, and that means to abolish the electoral college.
