When youthink of the word technology, what comes to mind? The average person thinksthat technology deals with gadgets or gizmos, however, there is more to the meaning of that word called “Technology”. Technology isscientific knowledge or can be described as products or processes that are usedto accomplish various tasks in our daily lives such as learning, communication, creating artifacts and so much more (Ramey, 2013). Another important term weneed to understand is creativity.
When people think about creativity, theythink about expressing themselves like anartist. However, the ability to use imagination or original ideas to createinventions is considered to be creativity. With advances in technology, there isa belief that technology diminishes one’s creativity (Franken,2006). Studies have shown that there are pros and cons to technology withrespect to enhancing and destroying creativity.
Therefore, the aim of thisstudy is to prove that technology kills creativity because it hinders humanimagination; computing has replaced creativity and education is not needed to enhance yourskills. During aninterview, Albert Einstein quoted “I am enough of the artist to draw freelyupon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge islimited. Imagination encircles the world” (Nilsson, 2013). The use oftechnology has restricted persons from thinking outsidethe box because they are provided with medium and resources that limits theircreative thinking and hinders their use of imagination.
The internet hasprovided such services to carbon copy another person’s idea to make it theiroriginal art piece and as a result of this, they are limited to theircreativity. Thomas Edison once said, “Toinvent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk” (Naiman andNaiman, 2017). With the help of person artwork being showcased whether on the internet or an old portrait, it can cause persons tochallenge themselves by creating new ideas and enhance their skills by creatinga new artwork. For example, “Da Vinci’s most famous paintings, his muralThe Last Supper has been an endless source of inspiration for artists andpop-culture parodists. But it’s Andy Warhol who elevated this depiction ofJesus’ last meal with his disciples to pop art iconography” (Berman, 2012).Although having access to the materialcan enhance ones’ skills it can also decrease ones’ creativity and originality.
Foundationartists such as Bill Graham and Norman Rockwell started off painting as a hobbyand gradually developed their art with limited tools such as pencils, paper, sculptures, charcoal, brushes or paints to create inspirational pieces thatcommunicated with persons emotions andmotivated up and coming artists to get involved; and now today they are knownto be the graphic design foundation artists of the 1900s. In Modern times, computing has replaced creativity with Digital Arts. DigitalArt is a revolutionized method where images are done on the computer withoutthe use of tangible art tools; or handdrawings can be scanned into the computer and then completed using softwareprograms such as Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop (Souter, 2018). In yearsto come education in artistry will no longer be needed because with the use of technology, software programsare readily available to create images. For example, paper, pens, images on theinternet and colour palettes are accessiblewith the click of a button. The foundation of art is gradually dwindling andbeing replaced with digital art so persons are becoming less creative and lessinnovative.
Havingaccess to software on tablets, computers and cellular phones, it is easier for individualsto enhance their skills leaving little to no use for classroom sessions. Thepurpose of art institutes is to boost students’ talents through theory andpractical sessions with the knowledge and guidance of the tutors. As technology evolved there has been thecreation of websites such as YouTube, which makes it easier for persons to getaccess to tutorials instead of sitting in a classroom (Clockwork Moggy, 2017). Thepurpose of the Software programs advertised on the internet is to enlighten potential customers about key featureshighlights of the programs. With the new development of multiple graphic designsoftware programs, persons are given access to the programs through the use ofpirated software which has caused a problem in the creative field.
With thisproblem, persons are able to download theprograms and this was self-taught using countless videos that have beenuploaded to YouTube to all your course content anytime, anywhere once you areconnected to the internet without any fee. The tutor in the videos, teaches you how to become an efficient, graphic designers and learners are able to enhance their knowledge by to understandingthe illustration concepts, procedures andideas (Pappas, 2015). Therefore, education at schools have now been reduced andnow persons have chosen the shortcut wayof learning to understand the basics on the websites instead of actuallygetting certified within the field of study. As a result of this individuals’creativity have dampened because these persons whocall themselves Graphic Designer, has taken over Art world with little or noeducation of the field and create flyers, logos, posters and magazines justlike the certified Graphic Designers. In conclusion, technology is anything that is created by human to make life easier or solveproblems. Although technology has a lot of positive remarks in our day to dayliving, it has negative feedbacks when it comes to our creativity in art orgraphic design. The moment computers and the internet were created persons imagination and originality started todecrease because they had access to different mediums and other resourcesanytime and any day.
With advancetechnology such as Digital arts, it has replaced ‘pen-to-paper’ art with theclick of a mouse to create images resulting in less creativity and lessinnovation. Individuals do not need to go to art institutes to earn a degree inGraphic design because tutorials on how to use the software programs are madeaccessible on YouTube. Overall, technology and creativity goes hand in hand but it is becoming vivid thattechnology is increasing and creativity in the art world is decreasing.
